The group has now broken into many new sector and has expanded its business internationally. The group¡¯s business structure has not been affected by this change but two of the companies¡¯ names has changed, GMV SA is now called GMV Aerospace and Defense SA while Soluciones Globales Internet SA changed its name to GMV Solutions Globales Internet SA. ACeS Global Expansion Enables Smart Communications Worldwide Reach October 1, 2006 - Subscribers of Smart Communications and its parent company, Philippines Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) could access more Filipinos worldwide following the global expansion of Asia Cellular Satellite (ACeS) by forging wide-ranging collaboration arrangements with Inmarsat. This partnership will take ACeS, formerly a regional operator, to become global, with the combined coverage of ACeS¡¯ Garuda 1 satellite and the Inmarsat 4 series satellites. Globecomm Systems Awarded Service Contract Extensions from Afghan TelecomOctober 5, 2006 - Globecomm Systems, a provider of end-to-end satellite-based communications solutions, announced that its subsidiary, Globecomm Network Services Corporation (GNSC) was awarded service contract extensions from Afghan Telecom valued at US$ 2.1 million. Afghan Telecom has coverage in 144 cities, towns and districts of Afghanistan, representing the largest network coverage in the region. This is made possible largely in part through their District Communications Network (DCN) and the Government Communication Network (GCN), which were designed, installed and maintained by Globecomm and its partners in the region. iDirect Technologies and UTStarcom Successfully Test Next-Generation All-IP CDMA Solution October 5, 2006 - iDirect Technologies and UTStarcom partnered to expand cellular coverage by backhauling CDMA traffic over shared satellite networks. The joint solution combines UTStarcom MovingMedia 2000 all-IP CDMA base station equipment and iDirect VSAT satellite routers, allowing cellular service providers to expand their cellular footprint to remote regions. Utilizing shared access over satellite will allow providers to balance and redistribute available network bandwidth across multiple cell sights for greater network efficiency and lower bandwidth cost. Gilat SkyEDGE Expands Russian Distant-Learning October 12, 2006 - Gilat Satellite Networks will supply a SkyEDGE broadband satellite hub station and several VSATs to Russian satellite services operator, Teleport-Services. The company will use the SkyEDGE network to expand an interactive distant-learning initiative for the Modern University for the Humanities (MUH). The distant-learning network will consist of 300 sites for MUH and will include using the VSAT network to serve businesses and government agencies in remote regions of eastern Russia. Iridium and Eclipse Aviation Announce Mobile Satellite Products and Services for Eclipse 500 October 17, 2006 - Iridium Satellite and Eclipse Aviation, manufacturer of the world¡¯s first very light jet, announced that the Iridium mobile satellite communications system will be a standard offering on the Eclipse 500. Eclipse will develop a digital datalink system incorporating the Iridium Satellite 9522A L-Band transceiver for the Eclipse 500. The system will transmit operational data, which will provide automatic OOOI times and engine trending information. Air taxi operators will also use this system to record operational times to track flights from gate departure to gate arrival. Hughes to Provide CSK Auto With Managed Network Services SolutionOctober 18, 2006 - Hughes completed the rollout of HughesNet Managed Network Services, which employs a combination of satellite and DSL broadband technologies, at 1,175 CSK Auto retail locations. CSK Auto, which operates more than 1,280 retail auto parts stores in 22 Western and Midwestern states, is utilizing the HughesNet Managed Network Services as the backbone between its stores and corporate headquarters to support real-time applications such as credit and debit verifications, inventory availability inquiries and return verifications. Thuraya Officially Releases Worlds Smallest Satellite Phone October 18, 2006 - Thuraya officially released its second-generation handheld phones, the SO-2510 and the SG-2520, after receiving rave reviews since their soft launch a few months ago. The SO-2510 is a satellite only version designed for those requiring mobile connectivity in areas beyond terrestrial networks. Thuraya plans to sell 90,000 units of SO-2510 in 12 to 15 months. SG-2520 will be commercially available later this year, with the company planning to sell 70,000 units in 12 months. The new phones, manufactured by APSI of South Korea, generated a lot of interest at the APSCC Satellite Conference & Exhibition held in Seoul in September. RSCC Presents State Satellite Constellation Capabilities of Providing Services in RussiaOctober 22, 2006 - The Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) presented the state satellite constellation capabilities in developing socially important services in Russia at Infocom 2006 exhibition held from 18 to 21 October 2006. The main emphasis at the RSCC exposition was made on creating conditions for developing multi-program digital TV&Radio broadcasting over Russia. RSCC also presented the Russian state satellite constellation in the framework of the Russian space program till 2015 and the development program till 2009 devoted to securing a stable operation of the satellite communications networks of the RF, meeting the market demands and governmental communications. Intelsat Incorporates Glowlink Model 8000 Geolocation CapabilityOctober 23, 2006 - Glowlink announced that Intelsat purchased the Glowlink Model 8000 Satellite Geolocation System. The Model 8000 DSP based spectrum monitoring and geolocation system can monitor satellites from remote locations and is controlled from either a single operation center or multiple operation centers. The Model 8000¡¯s network-centric and scalable architecture allow it to be readily incorporated into an existing monitoring network without disruption to ongoing network operations. ViaSat and Verso and Announce New Marketing and Development Partnership Agreement October 25, 2006 - Verso Technologies entered into a partnership with ViaSat to jointly develop and market global satellite-based VoIP networking solutions using the ViaSat LinkStar broadband VSAT system with Verso¡¯s NetPerformer GSM and VoIP switching products. The two companies were recently awarded a multi-million dollar project in Ecuador for which ViaSat will provide both voice and IP broadband connectivity over satellite to the Ecuadorian government. ViaSat will deploy its LinkStar IP broadband satellite communications platform and Verso¡¯s Softswitch and media gateway solution to provide voice, fax, and voicemail services to more than 1,500 locations throughout Ecuador. Connexion by Boeing Contract Termination Payments to SES AmericomOctober 3, 2006 - Boeing announced the cessation of commercial operations associated with their satellite broadband service, Connexion by Boeing, effective December 31, 2006. In conjunction with this announcement payment of US$ 70 million relating to termination of the AMC-23 contract was made to SES Americom during the third quarter. The Ku-band Pacific Ocean Region capacity on AMC-23 is presently being remarketed to a variety of potential customers. BROADCASTING NEWS Eutelsat"s Hot Bird 8 Satellite Goes LiveOctober 3, 2006 - The Hot Bird 8 broadcast satellite of Eutelsat Communications went into commercial service at 13 degrees East on October 3. With a launch mass of 4.9 tons Hot Bird 8 has 64 Ku-band transponders which span the entire range of frequencies used at Eutelsat"s Hot Bird neighborhood for broadcasting more than 950 television channels and 550 radio stations to over 113 million homes. Built by EADS Astrium and launched on August 5, the scheduled in-orbit life of the satellite is expected to exceed 15 years. iDirect Technologies Envivio Selected for Live Broadcast TV to Maritime Market October 18, 2006 - Global at-sea communications provider Sea Mobile is using one of its companies to help bring live TV to cruise ships everywhere. By selecting Envivio and iDirect Technologies, Sea Mobile"s Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN) will be the first company to launch live television broadcasts to cruise ships anywhere on the planet. The Maritime Satellite Television Network (MSTV) service will use Envivio"s encoding systems and iDirect"s remote VSAT solution with MTN"s global satellite network and onboard communications antennas for reliable TV broadcasts. SES Americom Adds Harmonic"s Advanced Scrambling Technology October 24, 2006 - SES Americom announced the integration of Harmonic"s latest video encryption technology with SES Americom"s IP-Prime IPTV distribution service. The new Harmonic ProStream 1000 with ProCipher AES scrambling and bulk descrambling technology enables large and small telephone company operators and broadband service providers across the US to securely deliver a full line-up of top quality programming to consumers. GlobeCast to Deliver 2006 Asian Games Live via Satellite in SD and HDTVOctober 26, 2006 - For the first time in the history of the Asian Games, eight major sports will be produced in HDTV. In response, GlobeCast has been chosen by Qatar Telecom to provide satellite distribution, both SD and HD, beyond the International Broadcast Centre for rightsholders of the 2006 Asian Games. GlobeCast will also be providing non-rightsholder services such as live stand-up positions, studio, and tape playout from Doha. The Fifteenth Asian Games will be held in Doha on December 1-15 and 50 countries are expected to produce more than 3,000 hours of television for an anticipated cumulative audience of approximately 1.5 billion viewers. Irdeto to Secure Leading Indian Satellite News Channels October 10, 2006 – Irdeto announced that TV Today Network (TVTN) chose the Irdeto Digital TV solution to protect the content of its premium Hindi and English satellite news channels. These include Aaj Tak, Tez, Dilli Aaj Tak and Headlines Today, which will be distributed to more than 10,000 local cable operators across the region using the Irdeto system. TVTN is a part of The India Today Group with a weekly reach of around 35 million viewers. ABC News Now to be Distributed in India via Satellite TVOctober 12, 2006 - Distributors have reached a deal to provide the ABC News Now service via satellite TV in India, marking the first time that the network¡¯s 24-hour news carrier will be seen outside of the US. ABC News Now will be shown on Dish TV before the end of the year. A subscription service, the programming is currently available to more than 25 million people through broadband, digital cable, satellite and wireless phone. BBC Plans Satellite TV Service for IranOctober 13, 2006 - The British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) is planning to launch a Farsi-language cable and satellite channel for Iran. The BBC said service would begin broadcasting for eight hours a day in early 2008 and would be available to anyone with a satellite dish or cable connection in the region. The channel would be run by the BBC¡¯s international broadcasting arm, the World Service. For the planned service, the government would supply the US$28 million annual operating cost. SPACE / LAUNCH NEWS Thaicom 3 Deorbited after Power Loss October 2, 2006 - Shin Satellite announced that its Thaicom 3 Satellite was deorbited after experiencing a power loss to such an extent that it could not provide further service. However, the company added that the deorbit of Thaicom 3 had no adverse effect as its customers had already been transferred to the new Thaicom 5 satellite launched earlier this year. JSAT¡¯s JCSAT-3A Communications Satellite Commences ServicesOctober 2, 2006 - JSAT announced that it commenced services using the JCSAT-3A communications satellite, after receiving a satellite station license in respect of the satellite from the Kanto Bureau of Telecommunications. JSAT formally took possession of the JCSAT-3A communications satellite from Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems on September 25, 2006. JCSAT-3A was launched as a successor spacecraft to JCSAT-3, which currently operates at an orbital position of 128 degrees East. Alcatel Alenia Space Signs Initial Agreement with Globalstar October 10, 2006 - Alcatel Alenia Space signed an initial agreement (Authorization To Proceed or ATP) with Globalstar, a provider of mobile satellite voice and data services, to commence work on Globalstar"s second-generation satellite constellation. The ATP provides that Globalstar and Alcatel Alenia Space will negotiate a contract for Alcatel Alenia Space to construct 48 LEO satellites for Globalstar"s second-generation satellite constellation. The ATP will terminate on the earlier of the signing of a definitive contract on November 15, 2006. Once signed, Alcatel Alenia Space will design, manufacture and deliver the 48 LEO Globalstar satellites and related services. ILS Begins Next Launch CampaignOctober 12, 2006 - International Launch Services (ILS) kicked off its next Proton launch campaign with the arrival of the satellite payload, Arabsat"s BADR-4, at the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 10. With the delivery of the Proton"s Breeze M upper stage, all flight hardware is in place for the scheduled November 9 launch. The BADR-4 launch will be followed in about a month by another ILS Proton mission, with the MEASAT-3 satellite. The Russian government also has scheduled the launch of a GLONASS navigation satellite on a Proton vehicle in December. SS/L-Built DIRECTV 9S Successfully Launched Aboard Ariane RocketOctober 13, 2006 - DIRECTV 9S, a hybrid Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) for DIRECTV, was successfully launched on October 13 aboard an Ariane 5 ECA rocket from Europe"s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. DIRECTV 9S will be positioned at 101 degrees West and provide direct broadcasts for local and national digital video service using advanced digital compression technology. Weighing approximately 5,530 kg at liftoff, DIRECTV 9S is fitted with 52 Ku-band transponders and 2 Ka-band transponders. Integral Systems to Provide Satellite Control Systems for VINASAT-1 October 16, 2006 - Integral Systems has been selected by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems (LMCSS) to provide primary and backup satellite control systems for the VINASAT-1 satellite. The satellite control systems will incorporate several elements of Integral Systems" EPOCH Integrated Product Suite (IPS) to provide a complete real-time command and control system as well as automated scheduling, procedure execution, offline trending and analysis, and flight dynamics functions. Orbital-Built Optus D1 Communications Satellite Successfully Launched October 16, 2006 - Orbital Sciences Corp. announced that the Optus D1 commercial communications satellite, built by Orbital for Optus Networks, was successfully launched into its targeted orbit aboard an Ariane 5 rocket on October 13. Optus D1 is the first of two satellites that Orbital is building for Optus. The second satellite, Optus D2, is scheduled for completion and launch in 2007. Optus D1 will operate in the Ku-band frequencies from its orbital location at 160 degrees East. The satellite is designed to provide fixed satellite services and DTH television broadcasting services to Australia and New Zealand. EADS Astrium to Deliver HOT BIRD 10 Broadcast Satellite for EutelsatOctober 19, 2006 - Eutelsat Communications announced that Astrium will build the HOT BIRD 10 broadcast satellite, which will be launched in the first quarter of 2009. It is the third high-power broadcast satellite based on Astrium"s Eurostar E3000 platform. The procurement of the satellite underpins Eutelsat"s objectives to continue to renew capacity at its HOT BIRD neighborhood and to raise in-orbit redundancy and security for broadcasting clients. Eutelsat"s 13 degrees East neighborhood broadcasts 950 TV channels and 540 radio stations to 110 million cable and satellite homes across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. China Great Wall Industry to Launch New Meteorological SatelliteOctober 23, 2006 - China Great Wall Industry is to launch a geosynchronous meteorological satellite, Fengyun-2E (FY-2E), on the Long March 3 launch vehicle, from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre at the end of this year. The satellite will play an important role in preventing and reducing weather-related disasters and monitoring the environment on Earth. China"s current geosynchronous meteorological satellite in orbit is the Fengyun-2C (FY-2C), launched in October, 2004 and the new satellite will alternate as a backup for the FY-2C. Arianespace Begins Assembly for Next Ariane 5 FlightOctober 28, 2006 - Arianespace"s fifth and final Ariane 5 to be launched in 2006 has begun its build-up at Europe"s Spaceport in French Guiana. This mission is set for a December liftoff with two spacecraft for US operators, the WildBlue-1 broadband connectivity satellite for WildBlue and the AMC-18 multi-mission relay platform for SES Americom. Ariane 5 integration activity has begun with erection of the cryogenic core stage and its positioning over the mobile launch table inside the launcher assembly building of the spaceport. Federal Trade Commission Clears United Launch Alliance Joint Rocket Venture October 4, 2006 - Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin confirmed that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) granted anti-trust clearance to proceed toward closure of the United Launch Alliance (ULA). The clearance is subject to compliance with a consent order that both parties have approved, and which will govern certain activities of the ULA, Boeing and Lockheed Martin upon closing of the transaction. ULA would be structured as a 50-50 joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Upon closing Michael Gass, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Space Transportation, will become ULA president and CEO. Russia and India to Jointly Use Glonass Satellite SystemOctober 4, 2006 - Russia and India will use a 24-satellite navigational and global positioning system, Glonass, together. Glonass, a Russian analogue of the US Global Positioning System, is designed to allow both military and civilian users around the globe to receive signals from satellites to identify their positions in real time. It can also be used in geological prospecting. Meanwhile, Russia will launch a small research satellite, Youthsat, which is an Indo-Russian project, and an agreement on the matter could be signed in November. The satellite will be built in India and launched by a Russian carrier rocket. India Government Clears US$139 Million for INSAT-4G BirdOctober 11, 2006 - The India government has cleared a US$ 139 million plan to launch a new communication satellite that will augment India¡¯s capacity to handle DTH transmission and broadband connectivity. The new satellite would also ease the pressure on the government to lease more foreign satellites to handle DTH transmission. The communication satellite will provide 18 Ku-band transponders to will be ready for operation in two years, with a mission life of 12 years. APPOINTMENTS MEASAT Announces Two New DirectorsOctober 6, 2006 - MEASAT Satellite Systems (MEASAT) has appointed Vishal Mathur as Director of Sales, South Asia and Anne Chan as Director, Broadcast Sales. Mathur will be responsible for building and supporting MEASAT¡¯s customer base across the South Asian region. Prior to joining MEASAT, Vishal worked with Zee Telefilms as Assistant Vice President. Meanwhile, Chan will be responsible for building MEASAT¡¯s broadcasting customer base on the new MEASAT-3 satellite. Prior to joining MEASAT, she worked with Asia Food Channel as Vice President, Channel Sales. Mary Frost Joins the Board of WTA October 10, 2006 - The World Teleport Association (WTA) has announced the appointment of Mary Frost, CEO of GlobeCast America, to its Board of Directors effective October 1, 2006. Frost will complete the three-year term on the Board, representing the Americas region, vacated by David Sprechman, GlobeCast America"s former chief executive, upon his departure from that company. WTA"s Board is made up of senior representatives of the teleport sector of the satellite industry from around the world. Robert Bednarek Appointed President and CEO of SES New Skies October 10, 2006 - SES Global announced the appointment of Robert Bednarek to President and CEO of SES New Skies. In his new position, Bednarek will continue to report to Romain Bausch, President and CEO of SES Global and will remain a member of the SES Executive Committee. Bednarek has been with SES Global since January 2002 serving as Executive Vice President Corporate Development and as a Member of the Executive Committee of SES Global. Prior to joining SES GLOBAL, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of PanAmSat. Frank McKenna Named President of ILSOctober 11, 2006 - Lockheed Martin Corporation"s shares of International Launch Services (ILS) were transferred on October 11 to Space Transport and the ILS Board of Directors appointed Frank McKenna as the company"s president. McKenna, who has more than 30 years of experience in the aerospace industry, served as ILS" vice president and deputy for the last two years. Additionally, McKenna was elected to the ILS board. Patriot Antenna Systems Announces the Hiring of Robert ReitzOctober 11, 2006 - Patriot Antenna Systems announced the hiring of Robert Reitz as Director of Business Development. Reitz is experienced in developing new activities in a global and international market. His responsibilities include Sales & Marketing for Patriot Antenna Systems¡¯ existing and new products for the government, military and international satcom sectors. He comes to Patriot from L-3 Communications¡¯ Narda- Satellite Networks Division, where he was Director of Sales and Marketing globally for satellite equipment. New Thai Minister of Information and Communication Technology AppointedOctober 12, 2006 - The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology of Thailand announced that H.E. Dr. Sittichai Pookaiyaudom was appointed as the Minister of Information and Communications Techonology. Chua Sock Koong Joins SingTel BoardOctober 12, 2006 - Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) announced that Ms. Chua Sock Koong has been appointed Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer and a member of the SingTel Board of Directors. With her new appointment, Ms Chua will be relinquishing her role as CEO International while covering as Group CFO. Mr Lim Chuan Poh, EVP of Strategic Investments, will assume the role of CEO International. Mr Lim will be responsible for SingTel¡¯s regional associates and supports the growth objectives of SingTel¡¯s business groups through strategic investments in the region Alcatel Alenia Space Announces New Appointments October 20, 2006 - Olivier Badard has been appointed Vice-President, Sales and Marketing for Alcatel Alenia Space"s telecommunications activities, based in Cannes, France. Badard will report to Blaise Jaeger, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Alcatel Alenia Space"s telecommunications activities. In the meantime, Eddie Kato recently joined the company as Vice President and General Manager for the Asia Pacific Region. He will head Asia Pacific marketing and sales satellites activities and will report to Olivier Badard. Prior to his appointment, Eddie Kato was Vice President, business development for Orbital Sciences Corporation"s communications satellites based in the US. iDirect Technologies Appoints Toni Lee Rudnicki as Chief Marketing OfficerOctober 23, 2006 - iDirect Technologies announced the addition of Toni Lee Rudnicki as their Chief Marketing Officer. Before joining iDirect, Rudnicki was the Chief Marketing Officer for Tandberg where she was responsible for all global marketing activities. Rudnicki holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Duke University"s Fuqua School of Business. Via Satellite Promotes Jason Bates to EditorOctober 23, 2006 - Access Intelligence, a B2B information and marketing solutions provider, announced that Jason Bates has been promoted to Editor of Via Satellite, Satellite Business Solutions and Satellite News. Bates joined Via Satellite as Assistant Editor in April 2005. During his tenure, he also served as Editor of Via Satellite¡¯s bi-annual MilSat Supplement. Intelsat Announces New Senior Vice President of Marketing and New Press Contact October 25, 2006 - Intelsat announced the appointment of Vicki Warker as the new Senior Vice President of Marketing. In this role, Warker is responsible for the company"s growth initiatives and maximizing the company"s performance in serving the video and network services customer groups. In addition to that, Nick Mitsis, formerly editor of the satellite magazine Via Satellite, has taken over the media relations work of Jodi Katz at Intelsat. He will report to Dianne VanBeber, Vice President of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications. SES Americom Names Bill Squadron to Lead Media Partnerships & Venture InvestmentsOctober 27, 2006 - SES Americom appointed William (Bill) Squadron as Senior Vice President, Media Partnerships and Venture Investments. Squadron is responsible for expanding relationships with content companies and program networks.
